Executive Summary

Zeen by Exokinetics is a patented mobility device that creates a new category between a wheelchair and a walker. Traditional wheelchairs provide seated mobility, but often keep people low, passive, and socially separated from eye-level interaction. Walkers and rollators encourage upright movement, but they do not lift the user from sitting to standing and may not provide enough continuous support for people who struggle with balance, endurance, or fear of falling. Zeen is designed for the person who wants more than a place to sit: it helps them sit, stand, walk, coast, and rest with support in the same device.

The core differentiator is Zeen’s motor-free assisted sit-to-stand lift combined with continuous support from its specialized seat, belt, and frame. Using proprietary gas-spring technology rather than motors or batteries, Zeen can help raise a user from a seated position to full standing while keeping them supported throughout the transition. Once upright, the user propels the device under their own power, using their legs for movement and the Zeen for stability, confidence, and rest when needed. This design promotes upright posture, weight bearing, and active mobility without requiring the user to rely on powered drive systems.

For the Zeen user, the benefits are practical, physical, and social. Zeen fills a critical gap between traditional mobility devices, helping Veterans maintain independence, confidence, and quality of life by enabling safe, supported upright mobility while reducing the fear of falling. It enables eye-level engagement with family, friends, caregivers, and clinicians; improves access to counters, tables, and daily environments; and can allow for hands-free interaction once the user is comfortable and properly fitted. For active-minded people facing declining mobility due to age, chronic disease, injury, or disability, Zeen offers a path toward greater independence, freedom of movement, dignity, and a healthier active lifestyle.

Zeen Devices in the VA Medical System

Zeen was added to the VA FSS in July 2025.

As of July 2026, more than 75 VAMCs have purchased Zeen devices for over 200 Veterans.

VA Physical Therapists understand that the Zeen is not intended to create walking ability where none exists. It is intended to augment current capability. For the right candidate, that support can make walking, standing, and activity feel more achievable, less intimidating, and more sustainable over time.

How the Zeen Works

A supported sit-to-stand platform

The user begins seated, fastens the seatbelt, places feet under the body, squeezes the seat-release levers, and leans forward as the assisted lift raises the seat.

Height and lift settings are adjusted to the user, and the seat can stop at multiple levels for standing, coasting, or transport chair use.

User-controlled movement

Direction and speed are controlled by the user’s legs and feet. Hands can remain on the handlebars for support, similar to a walker or rollator.

The swiveling seat supports step-through motion, while coasting mode lets the user sit farther back and propel with longer strides.

The Zeen folded, with labeled features: folding handles, embedded seatbelt storage magnet, folding strap, and 360-degree swivel wheels that turn even when the frame is folded

Feature overview: assisted lift, handlebars/brakes, seatbelt, swiveling seat, footrests, caster locks, push handles, and folding frame.

Product form factor and storage: Zeen folds to 11 in. wide, opens to 25.2 in. wide, and uses four swivel casters for a 45 in. turning diameter.

Core Modes of Use

Sit and rise

Assisted lift helps transition from chair-height sitting toward standing.

Walk upright

Handlebars, seat contact, and seatbelt support movement under the user’s own power.

Coast and rest

Intermediate positions support elevated sitting, barstool-style access, and self-propulsion.

Receive assistance

Push handles and footrests allow a caregiver to assist when needed.

Ideal Zeen Candidate

Zeen is designed for people who are considering or already using an assistive device because of balance, strength, endurance limitations, or fear of falling, but who still have enough capacity to participate in standing and walking. It is especially relevant when the goal is not simply transportation, but continued activity, independence, and confidence.

Minimum user requirements

  • Able to stand and walk at least 10 feet, with or without assistance or another device.
  • Moderate trunk control and ability to stabilize upper body when in standing position.
  • Medically stable enough for physical activity.
  • 50-325 lb. user weight range, with appropriate gas-spring configuration.
  • 22-35-inch stand-over height range, measured from floor to groin while wearing shoes.
  • Functional grip in at least one hand.
  • Ability to learn the device, or a helper who can assist.

Common use settings

  • Home environments with single-level living, hard flooring or low-pile carpet, and sufficient doorway or furniture clearance.
  • Clinics and therapy settings where professionals can use Zeen to support gait, strength, endurance, balance, and training.
  • Community environments with paved, relatively flat surfaces, with uneven or sloped surfaces dependent on individual ability.
  • Caregiver-supported outings when the user benefits from push assistance at an appropriate seated height.

Benefits for Individuals, Families, and Professionals

Zeen may be used by individuals seeking more independent mobility, families who want a safer and more active way to support participation, and medical or assistive-technology professionals who want a tool for progressive training. The one-handed control option expands accessibility for users who have moderate strength and dexterity in at least one hand, and may also be useful in therapy settings. Improved mobility can benefit mood and mental well-being and delay the need for a wheelchair.

Veteran Testimonials

“I have had my Zeen since November! It is amazing the difference it has made in my daily routine and in my wife’s! I can do simple tasks that I had lost the ability to do before my walker. We both are so thankful every day for how it has improved our quality of living and being functional with family and friends!”

John C., Army, Ralph H. Johnson VAMC in Charleston, SC

“With the Zeen, I noticed I could maintain much better alignment. As I told my physical therapist, it let me ‘elongate my spine.’ No more hunching over like I tend to do with my forearm canes. When I did start to tire, I could simply sit down on the built-in seat of the Zeen, take a short break, and then continue walking. It’s a smooth transition from walking to sitting and back again.”

Izzy A., E-5 Sergeant, USMC

“I had to relearn how to talk and relearn how to walk, and that took all my courage away. Now, the Zeen has brought my courage back.”

Anthony S., Captain, USAF, Purple Heart

“With the Zeen, a 96-year-old WW2 Vet regained mobility, began moving independently, and rejoined social activities like dining with others.”

Physical Therapist, Alwyn C. Cashe State Veteran’s Nursing Home

“For a 76-year-old Vietnam Vet, introduction of the Zeen reduced his fear of falling and motivated him to re-engage in therapy.”

Recommended Next Steps

  • Contact a Zeen representative to train clinicians and staff on Zeen device and patient application: 833-367-9336 or GoZeen.com.
  • Screen for candidacy using mobility, medical stability, stand-over height, weight, grip, cognition, and environment.
  • Fit the device carefully: confirm lift setting, maximum height setting, seatbelt position, and user comfort before progressing.
  • Start with guided familiarization. Emphasize short sessions, safe surfaces, foot contact with the floor, brake awareness, and confidence-building repetitions.
  • Use professionals or trained helpers when mobility level, transfer ability, balance, cognition, or environment creates additional risk.

Positioning Statement

For the right user, Zeen offers a new middle ground: more active than passive seated mobility, more supportive than a walker alone, and more flexible than a single-purpose device. It helps users to stand, participate upright, practice movement, manage fatigue, and remain connected to the people and places around them.
